LONDON, ON – March 21, 2025 — The City of London is set to receive an additional $7.3 million from the federal government under the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), aimed at fast-tracking the development of 184 new homes over the next two years.
The funding was announced Friday by the Government of Canada, recognizing London as a top-performing city under the HAF program. The fund, launched to address Canada’s housing crisis, rewards municipalities that meet their housing targets and implement bold strategies to increase housing supply.
“With this funding, we are accelerating our efforts to increase housing supply, streamline approvals, and deliver much-needed homes for Londoners,” said London Mayor Josh Morgan. “This is another important step forward in addressing the housing crisis.”
As part of the new investment, London plans to introduce three grant programs that will support the creation of affordable housing, encourage the development of Additional Residential Units (ARUs), and promote housing growth along key transit routes, including the conversion of office spaces into residential units.
The Housing Accelerator Fund supports municipalities that remove zoning barriers, reduce red tape, and encourage greater housing density — especially near transit and educational institutions. The federal government aims to fast-track 112,000 new homes by 2028, which could lead to the development of more than 750,000 homes across the country in the next decade.
“This investment is already making a real difference in this community,” said Arielle Kayabaga, Minister of Democratic Institutions. “Our government remains committed to working with partners to deliver solutions here in London and across Canada.”
To be eligible for this bonus funding, municipalities had to meet their year-one housing forecasts, follow through on their HAF action plans, and propose additional initiatives to accelerate housing. Successful cities could access up to 10% in additional funding over their original HAF agreement.
“The peace of mind that comes with having a stable home is invaluable,” said Peter Fragiskatos, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing. “These 184 new units will provide affordable, quality housing while also supporting the local economy.”
Minister of Housing Nathaniel Erskine-Smith added, “We are committed to removing barriers and cutting red tape to enable housing development. This additional funding will help leading communities do just that.”
